North Maluku is one of the provinces in Indonesia. Provincial commonly abbreviated as "Malut" consists of several islands in the Maluku Islands.

Before colonization [edit | edit source] 
This area was originally the former four largest Islamic empire in the eastern part of the archipelago, known as the Sultanate of Moloku Kie Raha (Sultanate of Four Mountains in the Moluccas), namely:

Age of independence 
Old Order 
In this era, the position and role of the North Maluku continued to slump, had enjoyed his position as the residency of Ternate between the years 1945-1957. Once the position is divided into several second-level region (district). 

Pioneering efforts of North Maluku Province has started since 19 September 1957 when the transitional parliament issued a decision to form the province of North Maluku to support the struggle for West Irian restore through Act No. 15 of 1956, but the effort was halted after the occurrence of a rebellion Permesta. 

In 1963, a number of prominent political parties like Partindo, PSII, NU, Catholic Party and Parkindo continuing effort ever undertaken by the Regional Representatives Council urge-Mutual Aid (DPRD-GR) to fight for the establishment of the North Maluku province. DPRD-GR response to this effort by issuing a resolution No. 4 / DPRD-GR / 1964 which essentially provide support for efforts to establish the North Maluku province. New Order 
During the New Order, the Moloku Kie Raha is divided into two administrative districts and one city. District capital in Ternate in North Maluku, Central Halmahera capital in Soa Sio, Tidore and Ternate City Administrative capital in Ternate. Third district / city still belonged to the province of Maluku. 

Order Reform 
In the reign of President Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, came the idea to do the acceleration of development in some areas with the potential to form new provinces. Maluku Province is one potential area that needs to be done through the accelerated development of the division of the provinces, especially because the pace of development between northern and southern regions or between regions and central and southeast mismatched. 

On that basis, the government established the province of North Maluku (the temporary capital of Ternate) is confirmed by Act No. 46 of 1999 on the Proliferation of North Maluku, Buru and West Southeast Maluku district. 

Thus the province was officially established on October 12, 1999 as a division of the administrative area of ​​Maluku province consists of North Maluku, Ternate and North Maluku. 

Furthermore formed again several new autonomous regions through Act No. 1 of 2003 on the Establishment of North Halmahera, East Halmahera, South Halmahera, Sula Islands District and Tidore.
